What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in San Antonio?

Just over 78,000 crimes were reported in San Antonio in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country. Almost 90 percent of them were property crimes, with larceny-theft, a type of theft that does not involve force, accounting for 66 percent alone. That puts San Antonio in good company, as property crime outpaces violent incidents like rape and murder in the rest of the state and nation as well.

San Antonio’s crime reports for 2019 equate to population-adjusted rates of about 700 per 100,000 residents for violent crimes and about 4,300 for property crimes. In both cases, those rates put San Antonio well ahead of the national pace. The nation as a whole has a violent crime rate of about 367 per 100,000 and a property crime rate of about 2,100 per 100,000, so San Antonio is more than double the national level in both cases.

Crimes in San Antonio, by number and per 100,000 people

Crime Number Per 100,000 people
All violent crimes 11,046 708
Murder 105 7
Rape 1,630 105
Robbery 1,965 126
Aggravated assault 7,346 471
All property crimes 67,422 4,324
Burglary 8,172 524
Larceny-theft 51,469 3,301
Motor vehicle theft 7,781 499
Arson 181 12

Compared to other major cities across the state and the U.S., San Antonio’s crime rates tend to be high. Among the 10 largest Texas cities, San Antonio has the highest population-adjusted rates of rape, larceny-theft, and property crime overall, and the city ranks in the top half for every other crime category. Its lowest ranking is fifth for its murder rate (Dallas is first). San Antonio ranks third nationally for its population-adjusted rate of rape, behind only Denver and Grand Rapids among the 60 biggest American cities. The city also ranks in the top 15 for overall property crime, murder, burglary, and larceny-theft.

Many major U.S. cities have seen crime rise since the start of the pandemic, but San Antonio has largely managed to buck that trend. While the number of murders in the city rose in 2020 by about 22 percent and they are on pace to rise again, this year’s increase is slower, only about four percent. And robbery, which saw a slight increase last year, has fallen by just over 30 percent so far this year. Burglary, larceny-theft, rape, and aggravated assault are all on pace to fall in 2021.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
