Though it’s the state’s largest city and the nation’s second largest, Los Angeles compares favorably to other major cities in California and across the country. Among the 10 biggest California cities, L.A. ranks in the top half of a majority of crime categories, but it does not lead any category. Its highest in-state placement is second, for both overall violent crime and aggravated assault. And among other major American cities, the Los Angeles metro area, which includes Long Beach and Anaheim, ranks in the top 15 for just one crime category, robbery (11th).
Like many other major U.S. cities, L.A. has seen an increase in homicides since the start of 2020, with many observers blaming the pandemic as well as civil unrest after the May 2020 murder of motorist George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
