What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Dallas?

As it is in most other places in the United States, property crimes are far more common in Dallas than violent crimes. That means that incidents like larceny and motor vehicle theft are much more common than things like murder or rape. In 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country, an estimated 45,000 property crimes were reported in Dallas compared to just under 12,000 violent crimes.

Those figures equate to a population-adjusted overall property crime rate of 3,321 per 100,000 and a violent crime rate of 863 per 100,000 people. In both cases, those population-adjusted rates are quite a bit higher than overall rates for the U.S. The nation has a population-adjusted property crime rate of about 2,210 per 100,000 and a violent crime rate of 367 per 100,000, and in both cases, the rates in Dallas far exceed that.

Compared to other major U.S. cities, Dallas does have higher rates of certain crimes than many other communities, including ones that are far larger. In fact, among the 50 largest American cities, no other one has a higher rate of motor vehicle theft, while Dallas also ranks in the top five for the overall violent and property crime rates as well as for murder, aggravated assault, and burglary.

In addition to having higher crime rates than most other big U.S. cities, Dallas has higher crime rates than many other major Texas cities. Dallas has the highest murder rate compared to the 10 largest cities in the state, nearly three points ahead of Houston, which has a much larger population. However, the city ranks sixth for its larceny-theft rate and fifth for its overall property crime rate (San Antonio leads in both cases).

Like many other major U.S. cities, Dallas experienced an increase in many types of crimes over the course of 2020, with many increases continuing into 2021. The number of murders in Dallas increased by 27 percent, with 251 reported in 2020. And so far in 2021, murder is again on the rise in the city, with Dallas projected to eclipse its 2020 total this year.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
