What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Cincinnati?

About 16k crimes were reported in Cincinnati in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country. The vast majority of incidents were property-related, which is the case throughout Ohio and the rest of the U.S., as property crime tends to be far more common than violent crime. In fact, 84 percent of Cincinnati crimes in 2019 were property-related, with larceny-theft alone accounting for 57 percent of crimes in the city.

On a population-adjusted basis, violent crimes took place in Cincinnati at a rate of 845 per 100,000, while property crimes occurred at a rate of just over 4,300 per 100,000. Nationally, the violent crime rate in 2019 was 367 per 100,000 people, while the property crime rate was about 2,100 per 100,000. As you can see, in both cases, Cincinnati has far higher crime rates than the county as a whole, but that’s typical for major cities thanks to their high population density.
