What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Orlando?

Just over 16,000 crimes were reported in Orlando in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country. The vast majority, almost 90 percent, were property-related crimes like burglary, auto theft, and larceny-theft. In fact, larceny-theft alone accounted for 70 percent of all crimes reported in the city in 2019. Like elsewhere in the state and nation, property crime is much more common in Orlando than violent crimes like murder or assault.

On a population-adjusted basis, violent crimes took place in Orlando at a rate of about 730 per 100,000 people, while property crimes occurred at a rate of about 4,800 per 100,000. These rates are much higher than overall national rates, but that’s common among cities due to population density. The U.S. violent crime rate is 367 per 100,000 people, while the property crime rate is about 2,100 per 100,000.

Crimes in Orlando, by number and per 100,000 people

Crime Number Per 100,000 people
All violent crimes 2,157 738
Murder 25 9
Rape 204 70
Robbery 536 183
Aggravated assault 1,392 477
All property crimes 14,100 4,827
Burglary 1,464 501
Larceny-theft 11,362 3,889
Motor vehicle theft 1,274 436
Arson 15 5

Compared to other major cities in Florida, Orlando’s crime rates tend to be on the high side. However, that’s common in communities with major tourist attractions (DisneyWorld), as an influx of temporary visitors causes a rise in crime rates. Still, among the 10 biggest cities in the state, Orlando’s crime rates are in the top three for each category. Orlando has the highest rates of violent crime overall, as well as aggravated assault and larceny-theft. But comparing the broader Orlando metro area, which includes Kissimmee and Sanford, reflects a more positive position for the city. Of the 60 biggest cities and metro areas, Orlando ranks outside the top 20 in every category. Its highest rating is 23rd in aggravated assaults.

Like many other cities, Orlando has seen a rise in violent crime since the start of the pandemic. The number of shootings in Orlando doubled from their 2019 levels, and the city’s police department launched a task force to combat the rise in violent crimes.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
