What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Oklahoma City?

About 32,000 crimes were reported in Oklahoma City in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country. Among those incidents, 85 percent were property crimes like burglary and motor vehicle theft, which puts the city in good company, considering property crime is much more common across the country than violent crime. In fact, more than half of all crimes were in a single category, larceny-theft.

On a population-adjusted basis, there were about 700 violent crimes per 100,000 residents and about 4,000 property crimes per 100,000 in Oklahoma City. While that’s higher than the overall U.S. rates of 367 per 100,000 and about 2,100 per 100,000, most major U.S. cities have far higher crime rates than the nation as a whole.

Crimes in Oklahoma City, by number and per 100,000 people

Crime Number Per 100,000 people
All violent crimes 4,751 722
Murder 75 11
Rape 539 82
Robbery 888 135
Aggravated assault 3,249 494
All property crimes 26,918 4,092
Burglary 6,206 943
Larceny-theft 16,922 2,572
Motor vehicle theft 3,790 576
Arson 96 15

Compared to other major cities in the state, Oklahoma City does not rank first in any individual crime category, though it does place in the top four for each category. Oklahoma City ranks second in robbery, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and overall property crime. Among the 60 biggest U.S. cities, the metro Oklahoma City area tends to rank in the bottom half, though it’s in the top 10 for two crime categories. Oklahoma City ranks 10th for rapes and seventh for burglaries.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
