What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Fort Worth?

Nearly 25,000 property crimes were reported in Fort Worth in 2019, making incidents like larceny and motor vehicle theft the most common criminal incidents in the city. Eighty-six percent of all crimes in Fort Worth were property crimes, while incidents like murder and rape were far less common. In fact, murders accounted for less than one percent of all crimes in the city in 2019.

Those figures equate to a population-adjusted violent crime rate of just under 450 per 100,000 and a property crime rate of just under 2,700 per 100,000. In both cases, those rates are slightly higher than overall national rates, which are 367 per 100,000 for violent crimes and about 2,100 per 100,000 for property crimes.

Crimes in Fort Worth, by number and per 100,000 people

Crime Number Per 100,000 people
All violent crimes 4,068 444
Murder 69 8
Rape 470 51
Robbery 972 106

Compared to other major cities in Texas, Fort Worth’s crime rates tend to fall in the middle. Among the 10 biggest communities in the state, Fort Worth’s population-adjusted crime rates rank in the top half three times: The city is fourth for both murder (Dallas is first) and motor vehicle theft (Dallas is first) and fifth for robbery (Houston is first).

Like many other major U.S. cities, Fort Worth experienced an uptick in crime in 2020, with most observers connecting the rise in crime with strain over the pandemic. Homicides in Fort Worth rose by 62 percent, while aggravated assault climbed 46 percent between 2019 and 2020. Over the first half of 2021, many incident types have continued to increase, with violent crimes up about eight percent. However, over the course of both 2020 and 2021, property crimes have generally declined in Fort Worth, and they’re down about five percent so far in 2021.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
