What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Denver?
The most common crime in Denver is larceny-theft, which describes the taking of property without the use of force, and about 18,000 such incidents were reported in the city in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country. Like just about every other place in the U.S. property crimes like larceny and motor vehicle theft are far more common in Denver than violent incidents like murder. In fact, about 27,000 property crimes were reported in the city in 2019 compared to about 5,500 violent crimes.
Those figures equate to a combined property crime rate in Denver of about 3,700 per 100,000 residents and a violent crime rate of about 749 per 100,000. In both cases, those rates are considerably higher than the overall national rates (about 2,100 per 100,000 and 367 per 100,000, respectively).
Crimes in Denver, by number and per 100,000 people
|Crime||Number||Per 100,000 people|
|All violent crimes||5,459||749|
|All property crimes||27,288||3,744|
|Motor vehicle theft||5,294||726|
Compared to other cities in Colorado, Denver tends to have higher crime rates, and in some cases, the differences are stark, though it’s important to note that no other city in the state comes close to matching Denver’s population. Still, the city has the highest violent crime rate, murder rate, aggravated assault rate, property crime rate, burglary rate, and motor vehicle rate of the 10 largest cities in Colorado. And among the largest cities across the country, Denver’s crime rates tend to be among the highest. In fact, the city ranks in the top 10 for each crime category reported by the FBI.
Denver, like many other major U.S. cities, experienced a spike in certain crimes over the course of 2020. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of murders in the city rose by more than 30 percent, and so far this year, most other types of crime are also on the rise. Overall, violent crime is on the rise this year, though domestic violence incidents have fallen.
It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
