What Types of Crimes Are Most Common in Atlanta ?

About 25,000 crimes were reported in Atlanta in 2019, the most recent year for federal data on crime across the country. As is the case across the state of Georgia and throughout the United States, the majority of those incidents are property-related. Property crimes like theft and burglary accounted for 87 percent of all crimes in Atlanta in 2019, with larceny-theft alone making up 64 percent.

On a population-adjusted basis, Atlanta saw about 670 violent crimes per 100,000 people and about 4,300 property crimes per 100,000. In keeping with other cities, those rates are considerably higher than overall national rates, due largely to population density. The U.S. violent crime rate is 367 per 100,000 people, while the property crime rate is about 2,100 per 100,000.

Crimes in Atlanta, by number and per 100,000 people

Crime Number Per 100,000 people
All violent crimes 3,378 667
Murder 95 19
Rape 244 48
Robbery 1,018 201
Aggravated assault 2,021 399
All property crimes 21,731 4,288
Burglary 2,820 556
Larceny-theft 15,956 3,148
Motor vehicle theft 2,955 583

Compared to other major cities in Georgia, Atlanta’s crime rates tend to be among the highest. In fact, the city ranks in the top half among the 10 biggest communities in the state in every individual crime category except for arson, where data for 2019 was not reported. Atlanta has the highest rates of both murder and motor vehicle theft in Georgia, and it ranks no lower than fourth for all others (except arson). Among major American cities, Atlanta is in a more favorable position. The metro area, including Sandy Springs and Alpharetta, ranks no higher than 22nd (for burglary) among the 60 biggest cities in any individual crime category.

Like many other American cities, Atlanta has been experiencing an increase in certain types of crimes since the beginning of 2020, and those trends have continued into 2021 in Atlanta. The number of homicides in Atlanta rose by almost 60 percent in 2020, and the city is on pace to see a similar increase in 2021.

It’s important to note that police- and FBI-reported data does not cover closed cases or incidents for which a person was convicted.
